One Picket Fence sits quietly on Wharf Rd in Newcastle East, serving up a straightforward breakfast and coffee experience that suits locals looking for a solid morning fuel-up rather than anything extravagant. It’s a café at heart, with a focus on quality coffee and a menu centered around classic breakfast staples crafted simply but well.

For those who arrive early or mid-morning, the vibe leans toward casual and comfortable. The space works well for solo visitors after a short work commute or small groups of friends catching up over cappuccinos and light bites. Coffee is a clear draw here, with a notably well-regarded flat white and good options like almond flat white and short black that appeal to traditionalists and those slightly adventurous on the milk front.

Menu highlights lean heavily on eggs done in various ways—whether it’s Eggs Benedict or Eggs Florentine—and staples like avocado on sourdough, which tends to be a crowd-pleaser, especially with extras like smoked salmon. Portion sizes can be modest; this isn’t the spot for a large, indulgent brunch but rather a neat, tidy breakfast. Those looking for extra substance might find themselves adding scrambled eggs or grabbing a house-baked muffin to round out the meal.

Service here is friendly and relatively prompt, fitting the familiar local café aesthetic where baristas are quick with a smile but not overly chatty. The ambiance is unpretentious, somewhat laid-back, making it an agreeable setting for a weekday breakfast or weekend catch-up without the noise or hype that larger café chains sometimes bring.

Given its location near Newcastle’s civic area, it's popular among nearby workers and visitors who want a dependable start to their day. It’s well suited to mornings through late morning hours when the light filters softly through the windows, enhancing the simple décor and relaxed buzz of conversation and clinking cups.

Overall, One Picket Fence offers a grounded breakfast and coffee routine that is dependable without feeling overstated—ideal for those who appreciate a focused, no-fuss café serving the basics done well in a convenient Newcastle East spot.

A nice little cafe in Newcastle. The eggs Benedict was spot on and the avocado toast was good as well, although the yoghurt dip was a bit salty for my liking. Service was good and ambiance was nice. Recommend!

Very tasty avocado on sourdough. The added smoked salmon was perfect, not too salty, more like a light cure.

Newy is blessed with so many fantastic cafes but this is still my strong favourite for the best flat white in town. The menu is pretty good but I’m mostly here for the coffee.

We had the Eggs Benedict and the mushroom toast. I added scrambled eggs to the mushroom toast and it was an extra $5. This made my meal $21 which is ok, I guess, but the portion size was tiny. One slice of bread, two mushrooms and a couple of spinach leaves just wasn't enough for me. The coffee was fine and the eggs and hollandaise sauce was good too. It's a good location, if you're looking for a spot close to the museum too.

Found this cafe five years ago when visiting Newy, it’s great to see it’s still going strong and as delicious as ever. Fresh produce, tasty meals and the coffee is fantastic. The staff are always attentive and friendly. I would be here all the time if I was a local.

Not bad...but very expensive!! $24 for a big breakfast. $10 for 2 eggs and One piece of sourdough toast. And $13 for an egg and bacon roll!! Food was good and tasty. Was very cold inside though.
